Buyers looking at Jupiter waterfront routinely ask the same practical question: 'What size boat can actually leave this dock and reach the ocean?' The answer starts with air draft, meaning the height of the boat from the waterline to the top of the tallest fixed structure, together with the clearance of the bridges the boat has to pass under. In the Jupiter and Palm Beach Gardens corridor, four bridges over the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (AICW) plus one fixed bridge over the Loxahatchee River do most of the constraining.
Direct answer: the four AICW bridges from Jupiter Island south to Palm Beach Gardens are U.S. 1 (Mile 1004.8), Indiantown Road (Mile 1006.2), Donald Ross Road (Mile 1009.3), and PGA Boulevard (Mile 1012.6). All four are bascule (opening) bridges, not fixed. Their closed-position clearances at the center of the bascule span, as published in the NOAA U.S. Coast Pilot, are 38 feet, 35 feet, 35 feet, and 24 feet respectively. Fixed AICW bridges in Florida are standardized at 65 feet of clearance above Mean High Water except the Julia Tuttle Causeway in Miami at 56 feet, per the Florida Inland Navigation District. These are the numbers to test any boat's air draft against.

A bascule bridge is a drawbridge that opens on a schedule or on demand. When it opens, air draft is no longer the constraint, though the boat's beam and length still matter. Height ceases to matter for that passage. When the bridge is closed, the published clearance controls.
A fixed bridge does not open. Its clearance is the ceiling, always, and it changes only with tide state. Real clearance is higher at low water and lower at high water. For that reason, published clearances for fixed AICW bridges in Florida are stated above Mean High Water (MHW).
The Florida Inland Navigation District's Updated Bridge Guide states plainly: 'All fixed bridges crossing the channel of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway in Florida have a clearance of 65 feet above MHW except the Julia Tuttle Causeway in Miami, which has a 56-foot clearance.' That 65-foot standard is why sportfishing boats and larger sailboats routinely route through inlets and up the AICW to South Florida. As long as they clear 65 feet, they clear every AICW fixed bridge.
All four AICW bridges in the immediate Jupiter and Palm Beach Gardens corridor are bascule bridges. That means each one can open, but each one also has a closed-position clearance that determines whether an opening is even needed. The NOAA U.S. Coast Pilot is the federal reference for the numbers:
| Bridge | AICW mile | Type | Closed clearance (center) |
|---|---|---|---|
| U.S. Route 1 (Jupiter Federal bridge, Loxahatchee/AICW junction) | 1004.8 | Bascule | 38 feet |
| State Route 706 (Indiantown Road) | 1006.2 | Bascule | 35 feet |
| Donald Ross Road | 1009.3 | Bascule | 35 feet |
| State Route 74 (PGA Boulevard) | 1012.6 | Bascule | 24 feet |
Two of those numbers deserve extra attention. First, the U.S. 1 bridge was recently replaced by the Florida Department of Transportation. The FDOT project page states: 'The Florida Department of Transportation has replaced the S.R. 5/U.S. 1 Bridge over the Loxahatchee River/Intracoastal Waterway in the Town of Jupiter.' The Coast Pilot's 38-foot number is the current published clearance for the replaced bridge. Do not rely on older Florida Inland Navigation District data that reflects the previous span.
Second, PGA Boulevard's 24-foot closed clearance is the lowest of the four. Boats with air drafts between 25 and 34 feet can pass under Indiantown Road, Donald Ross, and U.S. 1 without an opening but will require a PGA Boulevard opening to head south. That is not a dealbreaker; it is a scheduling reality.
The Town of Jupiter maintains a public drawbridge schedule for the North County corridor. It states the Indiantown Road bridge opens on the hour and half-hour, and the Donald Ross Road bridge opens on the hour. The exact schedules for U.S. 1, PGA Boulevard, and the Jupiter Island (S.R. 707) bridge are governed by U.S. Coast Guard rules and can change through temporary Coast Guard notices, so always check the current schedule the day of a passage.
The scheduling structure matters for lifestyle. A boat that has to wait for the top of the hour at Indiantown Road and the top of the hour at Donald Ross Road is going to add real time to a run. For an owner using the dock daily, that time compounds. For an owner running out to fish twice a month, it is a rounding error.
Buyers pricing a specific waterfront lot should walk the boat home from the dock, not from the ocean:
The NOAA U.S. Coast Pilot for the Atlantic Coast is the federal reference for AICW bridge clearances in Florida. The Florida Inland Navigation District's Updated Bridge Guide summarizes the same data in a boater-friendly format and cites 33 CFR 117.261 as the authority for drawbridge operating regulations. When a schedule changes for construction, hurricane events, or maintenance, the U.S. Coast Guard publishes temporary final rules in the Federal Register. Always check the current rule before a passage that depends on a specific opening schedule.
The NOAA Coast Pilot states: 'State Route 706 highway bridge (locally known as Indiantown Road bridge) at Mile 1006.2 has a bascule span with a clearance of 35 feet at the center.' It is a drawbridge, not a fixed bridge.
No. The Florida Department of Transportation's project page describes the S.R. 5/U.S. 1 Bridge over the Loxahatchee River/Intracoastal Waterway in the Town of Jupiter as a bascule bridge that was replaced. The NOAA Coast Pilot lists the U.S. Route 1 highway bridge at Mile 1004.8 with a bascule span and a clearance of 38 feet at the center.
NOAA Coast Pilot lists Donald Ross Road at Mile 1009.3 with a bascule span and 35 feet of clearance, and State Route 74 (PGA Boulevard) at Mile 1012.6 with a bascule span and 24 feet of clearance at the center.
The Florida Inland Navigation District's bridge guide states: 'All fixed bridges crossing the channel of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway in Florida have a clearance of 65 feet above MHW except the Julia Tuttle Causeway in Miami, which has a 56-foot clearance.'
Not all of them. The Town of Jupiter's North County Draw Bridge Schedule page states the Indiantown Road bridge opens on the hour and half-hour, and the Donald Ross Road bridge opens on the hour. It lists the Jupiter Island (S.R. 707) bridge and other bridges under separate schedules.
